Surf’s up! Contacting friends, buying new stuff or finding out amazing facts – ride that Internet wave!

At school or at home, with friends or by yourself, the Internet can be really fun. You can order cool stuff for your phone online like ringtones and wallpapers, but ALWAYS read the small print. Sometimes you might see something advertised as being FREE but be careful – if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. It’s fast and easy to say yes but before you enter your number or make that call, check the terms and conditions and know what you're saying yes to.

New websites and blogs are being created all the time – go for the stuff that has been specially made for you and avoid the ones that are for an older age group. It’s like going to the cinema – some films are made especially for you so you’ll like them more.

Some computers use dial-up and others use broadband. Dial-up means that your computer is ‘calling’ the website. As well as seeing ads on the Internet, you may come across some sites that actually charge you a premium rate to access them – they do this using a bit of software, known as a ‘dialler’, which makes your computer call a premium rate number rather than your normal Internet company’s number. To access these sites, you need to be over-18 and the bill-payer.
